A US-Bangla aircraft crashed while landing at the capital Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International airport.
The Associated Press, citing a police source, said at least 38 people had been killed and 23 injured, with 10 still unaccounted for.
An image posted to Twitter by Bishnu Sapkota (@BishnuSapkota) showed a huge plume of black smoke rising into the air with dozens of people rushing to the scene of the crash.
Further images from the scene show the burned out wreckage of the aircraft, with emergency services and Nepalese army personnel in attendance.

It is reported the aircraft came down on the eastern side of the airport and burst into flames.
Flight tracking website, FlightRadar24, reports the aircraft, call sign S2-AGU, made a landing at around 2.20pm local time, shortly after 8.30am GMT.
It is understood to have been a service from Dhaka, flight code BS211 / UBG211, with 67 passengers and four crew on board.
The plane was a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400.
The Foreign Office said in a statement on its website: "On March 12, a US-Bangla Airlines flight from Dhaka, Bangladesh, crashed on landing at Kathmandu International airport with reports of multiple casualties. Disruption to flights is likely.
"If you’re travelling to or from Kathmandu, you’re advised to check the status of your flight with your airline and follow the advice of the local authorities."
