The ambitious itinerary begins in Ushuaia, before heading towards the dramatic landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula. Highlights include navigating the iconic Lemaire Channel, known as the “Kodak Gap”, with its mirror-calm waters framed by towering ice cliffs, as well as shore landings in wildlife-rich locations such as Mikkelsen Harbour. Venturing south of the Antarctic Circle, the expedition reaches the remote Peter I Island, one of the least accessible islands on Earth. The voyage also visits the historic Bay of Whales, once the launch point for Roald Amundsen’s successful expedition to the South Pole in 1911. Guests will experience the unique thrill of crossing the International Date Line before entering the legendary Ross Sea. Visits to historic huts used by early explorers including Shackleton, Scott and Borchgrevink. Further highlights include the dramatic Balleny Islands, discovered in 1839 and rarely visited today. On the final leg of the journey, the remote sub-Antarctic islands south of New Zealand include Campbell Island, home to royal albatross and giant petrels, Enderby Island, and Snares Island, before the voyage concludes in Dunedin.
