But it made me wonder which phrase would best encapsulate 2017 for the travel industry.
It’s been a tumultuous 12 months – as our review of the year shows, there has been lots to keep agents, operators – and TTG – busy this year.
There were of course tragic lows – few will ever forget the devastating London and Manchester terror attacks – and awful natural disasters, including the most powerful hurricane to ever hit the Caribbean. And there have been company failures – from the collapse of All Leisure Holidays Group to the demise of Monarch Airlines – as well as many store closures announced by Thomas Cook in the months between.
But as Jo Rzymowksa points out this week, for all the tragedy of 2017, the pages of TTG have also been filled with stories of how the trade rallied to help those affected by these events.
As the Grenfell Tower tragedy unfolded in June, staff at nearby Audley Travel were busy working a rota system to help those affected. In the wake of Hurricane Irma, the industry united to raise funds. And since the Manchester attack, Westoe Travel has worked tirelessly to provide financial support for the families of apprentice Chloe Rutherford and her boyfriend who were killed in the bombing.
It’s worth noting too the agents launching new businesses – including 7 Advantage and 32 Global members. Travel Counsellors alone welcomed a record 328 new consultants. With all this in mind, I’d sum up this year with the word “resilience”. Because throughout the storms of 2017, many indie agents, consortia and operators posted record growth.
We are likely to face another turbulent year in 2018 – with regulatory challenges, Brexit uncertainty and the shadow of Donald Trump – but I’ve no doubt resilience will be demonstrated just as many times.
