According to reports, more than 7,500 people have been evacuated or ordered to stay indoors after the blaze ripped through 2,600 hectares of land.
More than 250 firefighters, alongside military emergency crews and 17 aircraft, are thought to be battling the fire, which broke out in the north-east of the island on Tuesday (15 August).
Speaking to The Guardian, Fernando Clavijo, regional president of the Canaries, said the blaze is continuing to burn out of control within 12 miles of the island’s capital, Santa Cruz.
"The night has been very tough," he reportedly said. "This is probably the most complicated blaze we’ve had on the Canary Islands – if not ever, at least in the past 40 years."
It comes following a spate of wildfires across southern Europe and the Mediterranean this summer, impacting destinations such as Rhodes, Portugal’s Algarve region and Italy, as well as further afield locations including Hawaii.
