The CMA does seem intent on creating additional work for travel agents. I completely understand their point on "hidden costs", as the customer needs to have all the information on costs to make an informed decision, but I can see no reason why at the enquiry stage the customer needs to know the tour operator.
Some travel agents may well copy offers to save them finding their own; some customers may see the operator and then try booking direct. Both of these are concerns. It is not easy to make money as an agent and if we are working hard to source offers, we should benefit from the booking.
I also see it as an issue for lesser-known operators. If a customer has not heard of them, they may be less inclined to want to book with them. Without naming the company and risking presumptions, we can have a conversation with the customer about booking with that operator.
It serves no purpose to list the operator or how a package was put together and it is not something Deben Travel will be doing. I would rather await a letter from the CMA and take the matter up with them directly if they are unhappy with how my business is advertising offers.
I also own a sweet shop in Woodbridge. Should I advertise which wholesalers I obtain my stock from, too?
The CMA seem to have the travel industry in their sights at the moment. Let's hope they will soon move on to another industry.
