Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones, along with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, has campaigned to reopen the airport and an operator has now been found. Commercial passenger flights could now resume by winter 2027/28.
Funding of £193 million to fully reopen the airport has been secured from a mix of funds, and now the council has approved up to £57 million of borrowing to fund the upfront and reopening costs.
More than 8,700 local residents have so far responded to an ongoing survey with 93% supporting the reopening.
Last month, Tui's UK and Ireland boss hinted its airline could return to Doncaster Sheffield airport.
Tui was one of several carriers, along with Wizz Air, to operate from DSA before owner Peel Group declared it commercially unviable and shut it in 2022.
Jones said: “Fully reopening Doncaster Sheffield airport is set to be the largest single investment in Doncaster for more than a generation, with unrivalled economy opportunities for our residents and businesses.
“I know that the airport can be a huge success for Doncaster, South Yorkshire and the north.”
