Posting to Facebook during the early hours of Tuesday morning (2 June), Humberside Police said a 34-year-old male was in custody following a burglary at the store in the high street.
The force said patrol officers received notification of an intruder alarm activation at the Tui agency, and a number of patrol officers, with assistance from the dog unit, attended within minutes of the initial report.
Following a search of the building, there was an “insecurity” found and a number of items were confirmed missing.
The male was located a short distance away, said the police, and had a number of allegedly stolen items about his person, including cash in different currencies. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police later confirmed to TTG the man has been charged.
The Facebook post went on to make light of the situation, signing off with: “It's safe to say the only holiday he will be going on anytime soon is one at Birchin Way Custody."
The branch posted to its Facebook page on Monday morning to confirm it would be closed for the day. It apologised for any inconvenience and directed customers to its Doncaster or Grimsby branches.
The branch reopened on Tuesday.
A Tui spokesperson said: "We can confirm our Scunthorpe store was broken into overnight. The store was closed at the time, there were no staff present and there was no access to the shop floor. We are working closely with the police and a full investigation is under way."
