The budget carrier has applied to the US government for a licence that would allow it to operate one-off charter flights to the US, according to The Times.
It has been suggested Wizz Air could be exploring options to serve English and Scottish football fans looking to head to the US for the World Cup.
The airline has a handful of Airbus A321XLR aircraft that could fly to the US, which are currently operating between Gatwick and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
Wizz Air previously placed an order for nearly 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, but has since reduced that order to 11.
In a statement, reported by The Times, Wizz said: "Wizz Air UK confirms it has submitted an application to the US department of transportation seeking the necessary approvals to operate services between the UK and the United States."
It added: “As stated in the application, Wizz Air UK plans only charter operations. The matter is subject to regulatory approval.”
At last year's WTM London, Dave Goodger, Tourism Economics' managing director, EMEA, claimed the Fifa World Cup could help unlock US growth beyond the "subdued baseline outlook" caused by geopolitical tensions, especially for host cities like Kansas City, Miami and Atlanta.
Several airlines are looking to capitalise on the excitement surrounding the tournament, including Singapore Airlines, which will be broadcasting matches live onboard select flights.
The Times also reports Wizz Air has not ruled out operating regular transatlantic services, but would need to "examine the costs carefully".
TTG has approached Wizz Air and the CAA for comment.
