Barrhead Travel will put an emphasis on equal opportunities at its new training academy, but chief executive Sharon Munro would “absolutely not” consider positive discrimination when it comes to hiring.
That was the message last week, as the Scottish travel agency giant celebrated the fact that eight out of 10 of its board are women – seemingly bucking the trend among businesses – as its new training academy gets up and running.
It comes just months after the first Women in Travel Empowerment Index released by the Association of Women Travel Executives (AWTE) revealed that while there has been an increase in the proportion of female board members at UK travel firms, the figure is still shockingly low. In 2005 women made up 12% of board members. In 2015, a decade later, it was still only 26%.
