In a statement, easyJet said the acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals and expected to be confirmed in December, would make it “the leading airline in Berlin”.
The Luton-based carrier also said it was hoping to recruit around 1,000 Air Berlin pilots and cabin crew over the coming months.
EasyJet said it planned to operate a reduced timetable at Tegel during this coming winter season and announcements on new routes and services to be flown to and from the airport would be made “in due course”.
Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy in August after its largest shareholder Etihad Airways withdrew its investment.
