The system allows energy to be captured by the aircraft brakes on landing, which then goes to charge batteries. It is a similar system to the one found in Formula 1 cars.
The stored energy could then be used for an activity like taxiing, eliminating the need to use the jet engines.
Easyjet is aiming to trial the system this year.
Ian Davies, head of engineering at easyJet, said: “The hybrid plane concept we are announcing today is both a vision of the future and a challenge to our partners and suppliers to continue to push the boundaries towards reducing our carbon emissions.
