EasyJet has blamed higher passenger charges for its decision to pull out of its Rome Fiumicino base.
The no-frills carrier will no longer station aircraft and crew in the Italian capital from April 2016.
Instead, easyJet will shift its operations around by expanding its bases in Italy at Milan Malpensa and Naples and opening one in Venice.
EasyJet said its Rome base was delivering lower returns than others, blaming this on “high airport passenger charges”.
EasyJet chief executive Carolyn McCall said: “Our plans will expand our presence at Milan, Naples and Venice, while ensuring we continue to connect Rome Fiumicino with Europe in a way that best reflects demand.”
