At least 44 people were killed in the attacks on Palm Sunday of the churches in Tanta and Alexandria with Islamic State claiming responsibility.
Now, President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has announced a new crackdown by the state which includes further restrictions on freedom of movement and gatherings; the deployment of security forces to enforce measures and the arrest of anyone suspected of violating state of emergency.
He said the measures were necessary as part of the “long and painful” war against jihadists.
However, the president has been criticised in the past for the ongoing severe restrictions on both civil and political rights.
