The FCO amended its advice following the televised speech by president Robert Mugabe on Sunday.
Mugabe had been expected to announce his resignation on a state televised broadcast, but instead used the opportunity to vow he would preside over his party’s next congress in December. He is now facing impeachment.
The FCO has warned British tourists in the country that there are “reports of planned demonstrations over the next few days, particularly in Harare.
“You should continue to exercise caution and avoid large gatherings and any demonstrations,” it states. “Although demonstrations have so far been peaceful, we can’t be sure that this will be the case in future.
