Storm Stella was last night over Washington DC with falling snow and is expected to hit New York City within hours.
A total of 7,635 flights on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday have been cancelled along the East Coast in anticipation of the storm which could affect as many as 20 million people.
Many of the flights already cancelled were in Chicago which has suffered the worst of the snow and travel across the north east is predicted to be “crippled” by the event.
It is expected to reach as far north where between 10 and 16 inches of snow is expected to fall.
