Angie Mays told TTG she hoped backing from the trade would enable the Grenfell Tower Holiday Appeal to create a “holiday brochure” of getaways for those caught up in the blaze to provide “a little escape” from the tragedy.
Mays launched the campaign on Facebook with a friend in the aftermath of the tragedy on June 14, which is so far believed to have killed around 80 people.
The nursery practitioner from Ilfracombe, Devon, said she had been “inundated” with offers of holidays and breaks from the public, with more than 400 short-stays given so far by small businesses, B&Bs and guesthouses nationwide.
Despite the “incredible goodwill”, however, Mays said the appeal was having difficulty funding transport such as coaches and flights to get people out to the properties and said she was currently lacking enough funds to expand the breaks to former residents of Grenfell Tower.
“It would be incredible to get the support of the travel industry and would help us do so much for the residents as well as the firefighters… as it’s them we really want to help too,” she said.
“A lot of them are stuck in hotel rooms with small children and they just need some respite from the awfulness of what’s happened.
“If we were able to be given flights that would be amazing and mean the world to a lot of people.”
