According to US media reports, the Star Wars actor mistakenly landed on a taxiway at John Wayne airport, near Los Angeles - in the process passing over an American Airlines passenger aircraft.
Ford had allegedly been told to land his plane on an adjacent runway on Monday (February 13).
The awaiting American Airlines aircraft is believed to have had 110 passengers and crew onboard at the time.
It departed safely minutes later.
Ford, 74, has not commented on the reported incident.
The Federal Aviation Authority confirmed that the pilot of the single-engine Aviat Husky plane had been cleared to land on the runway, BBC News reports.
The authority declined to confirm that Ford had been at the controls of the aircraft at the time of the incident.
The episode was initially reported by NBC and the celebrity website TMZ in the US.
Ford, who is a certified pilot, has been involved in several air accident over the years including crashing his light aircraft onto an LA golf course in 2015 and crash-landing his helicopter during a training flight in 1999.
