Smaller blasts were heard and fireworks seen in the sky above the village of Gudja, the Mirror reports.
It’s thought the explosion, which happened at 4.20pm local time, started in a container used to store fireworks.
Stunned airport passengers took pictures and videos of a huge plume of smoke.
Local Robert Camilleri told the Times of Malta: "The windows were shaking as was the whole house. Now I know what being in an earthquake feels like."
Two people were treated at the scene for anxiety.
A number of flights were delayed, however it is unclear whether this was related to the blast.
On Monday October 24 flights, to and from Malta International airport were halted after a light aircraft crashed killing five French nationals.
