Senior figures have reportedly told the newspaper that Jeremy Corbyn and his senior colleagues are “almost certainly” going to oppose Heathrow’s third runway proposal when it comes to a House of Commons vote.
Labour’s manifesto for the June general election appeared not to oppose the proposed £16.5 billion expansion of the airport.
But the manifesto’s wording did suggest that Labour would need to be satisfied of certain conditions being met.
The manifesto mentioned noise issues being addressed, air quality being protected, the UK’s climate change obligations being met and growth across the country being supported.
The Financial Times reports that the Labour leadership is refusing to say whether or not it would try to whip its MPs against the third runway plans.
Corbyn’s spokesperson said: "We will assess any proposals against our four tests."
