And seven days later, it seemed the main political parties were no clearer to being able to spell out their manifestos.
As one party press officer confessed to TTG, “unfortunately we’re in a bit of a flux”. Which although understandable is also unhelpful, because as the TTG Analysis highlights, there are significant points the industry will soon need answers on.
If freedom of movement is restricted, this could be disastrous for those travel firms that depend on EU workers – and likewise, depend on British employees working as reps in the EU. And if parties are committed to “simply walking away” from the negotiating table if the UK can only secure a “bad deal”, (as suggested by Ukip leader Paul Nuttall, along with several Tories, not least the prime minister herself), how will this hamper our much-needed discussions on the open skies agreement?
TTG has attempted to answer some of these questions by examining existing platforms and previous manifestos from the 2015 election. Which should come in handy for the fair few readers who admitted in our poll they remain undecided as to who will get their vote.
Of course people tend to vote more with their hearts than their heads, but this is being billed as the “Brexit election”. The various promises of the main parties regarding how they will deal with the UK’s departure therefore matter.
With such serious consequences for our sector and the UK at large, our political parties – and us, as voters – cannot afford to remain in “flux”. As our caricaturist highlights, the countdown has very much begun, but our analysis shows there are far too many issues that remain a conundrum for our political leaders. They – and we – must be ready for when the buzzer sounds on June 8.
Leader: We must be ready when the buzzer sounds on June 8
