The Trivago Hotel Price Index has shown that hotel accommodation in the capital for August 2016 is the cheapest it has been in four months, with average price per night of £143, down from £171 in July, writes Plamena Manolova.
There has also been a fall in prices year-on-year, with London pricing 15% lower this August compared with August 2015, when the average price was £169.
Graham Balmforth, national sales manager at SuperBreak, suggested the decrease might be due to concerns about terrorism following recent events around the Europe.
He added: “London is the biggest selling city in the UK but the market has gone down a little bit, mainly because there are some people who are still cautious about going down there. There has been this drop in prices by the hoteliers, to try and generate the market.”
Balmforth also pointed out that London was often quieter in August as it is not the major month for city breaks.
Other UK cities also saw a fall in prices this month, according to the hotel search website’s latest index. Hotel accommodation in Manchester in August cost £104, which is 17% less than in July, when the average price was £125.
Brighton has seen a decrease of 15% since last month, down to £112. Leeds has gone down by 14% to £86, which is the lowest average price the city has seen this year.
Average pricing in Edinburgh jumped 35% this month, reaching £202, because of the annual International Fringe Festival, making it the only city in the index where prices increased in August.
