President Yameen yesterday announced the month-long clamp down which has suspended a number civil rights and given security forces extra powers in the run up to anti-government protests.
They are also in response to a bomb attack on the president’s speedboat in September, which injured his wife and two bodyguards, and come following the arrest of the vice-president on October 24.
However, the Foreign Office (FCO) has released advice saying that the new security measures are unlikely to impact travellers’ holiday plans.
The advice said: “The government of Maldives has said there will be no restrictions on tourist movements and that tourist resorts are unlikely to be significantly affected. You should take extra care and follow local advice.
“Political protests have been taking place since the arrest of former President Nasheed earlier in 2015.
“Demonstrations have mainly taken place in Malé and some have led to violence and arrests.
“You should take appropriate security precautions, comply with local security requirements and avoid large gatherings, protests and rallies.”
