Mosquito inspection teams took to Miami Beach on Thursday, after local health officials were reportedly told that the first locally transmitted case of Zika had been diagnosed in the resort, the Telegraph reported.
A total of 557 people in Florida have contracted Zika this year, including 63 pregnant women.
Of those, 33 are locally acquired cases, with all but seven traced to Wynwood – a district popular with tourists.
Health officials insist that Wynwood is the only area of Miami where the disease is actually being spread.
But sources told the Miami Herald that Miami Beach has now had its first non-travel case.
An announcement is expected to be made as early as today (Friday).
“Our strategy has been and will continue to be focusing on the elimination of potential breeding sites and educating our residents and businesses on what they need to do,” said Jimmy Morales, of the Miami Beach public works department.
