The ship, which is currently under construction, will be the second of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway Plus class.
"Our new purpose-built ship for China will have characteristics that are authentic to Norwegian Cruise Line and yet distinctively Chinese in all of its sensibility," said chief executive Frank Del Rio.
To support its expansion into China, Norwegian’s parent company has opened a new office in Shanghai to go alongside outlets in Beijing and Hong Kong. The offices will support all three brands in the company’s portfolio - Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.
Norwegian will take delivery of its first Breakaway Plus class ship, Norwegian Escape on October 22. As well as the ship earmarked for China, there will be two additional ships, scheduled for delivery in 2018 and 2019, taking the total number to four.
Norwegian’s foray into China follows similar moves from rivals such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean.
