The Libyan passenger aircraft, which is known to have 118 people onboard, was on an internal flight from Sabha to Tripoli when it was diverted, Sky News reports.
The prime minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat tweeted that he had been made aware of a "potential hijack situation" involving a domestic Libyan flight diverted to the Mediterranean country.
Malta airport officials have said the Airbus A320 has landed and there appears to be two hijackers are onboard, Sky News reports.
Muscat said security and emergency operations were standing by to deal with the situation.
