The UK government yesterday announced that while flights taking customers to the destination remained banned, today would see the launch of a service bringing customers home.

However, all hold luggage on the return flights has been banned with certain restrictions placed on carry-on bags too.

The flights are being operated by easyJet, Monarch, Thomson and British Airways in an attempt to bring home anything between 9,000 and 19,000 passengers.

However, both newspaper reports and social media suggest the situation at Sharm’s airport is descending into chaos. Some reports have even claimed that the today’s entire programme has been cancelled.

Complaints are emerging of delayed and cancelled flights, confusing information despite the Egyptian minister of aviation reporting up to 29 flights would depart for the UK today out of a total of 74 today.

The situation comes following the UK government’s announcement earlier this week that the destruction of the Russian Metrojet aircraft over the weekend, which killed all 224 people on board, was most likely caused by a bomb.

However, it has yet to raise the threat level in the resort, meaning those on holiday there can continue with their trips as planned.
