John McGarry was reportedly ordered to visit the US embassy in London prior to his £6,500 cruise to be quizzed and fingerprinted.
However when the ship reached New York, the retired policeman was escorted by police and grilled again after they noticed on his visa that he had been called to the embassy, the Metro reported.
McGarry said the Manchester-based travel agency had made the error while filling out a form from the US department of Homeland Security for him.
It ticked yes to the question: “Do you seek to engage in or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities, espionage, sabotage, or genocide?”
McGarry said the cruise had been “ruined” for him. “I had 19 days of hell. It wasn’t necessary, all they had to do was tick the right box,” the newspaper reported.
He said the agency had sent him a £150 voucher but that he had sent it back.
