A further 27 people were injured in the attack – some seriously.
Suicide belts and weapons were reportedly seized at the hideout used by the four gunmen.
The gunmen had earlier opened fire on two police patrols before they fled to the castle and attacked a police station. Several tourists were trapped inside the castle, but they were later freed as security forces moved in.
The attack is believed to have started early on Sunday, with a shoot-out between police and armed men at a house near Karak, before the gunmen fled by car into the city.
It is not clear if the gunmen belonged to any militia group, however Islamic State has previously threatened to “break down” Jordan’s borders. Jordan is a close ally of the US and a member of the US-led coalition fighting IS in Syria, the BBC said.
