Several UK newspapers are reporting that the country’s top brewery Bucanero is struggling to keep up with demand.
The problem is the sudden surge in US tourists, and the boom in private bars and restaurants since laws were relaxed.
Bucanero markets under its own brand and also produces the Cristal beer. A spokeswoman told media that a new plant needed to be constructed to keep up with demand.
Cuba’s most famous beverage is however rum, and there is apparently no problem with this.
Beer supplies will be under more strain from next month when cruise ships from Miami begin docking in the capital Havana.
It will be the first time since Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959 that US cruise ships have visited the island.
Carnival’s MV Adonia will sail to Cuba on May 1, also calling at Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba.
