Speaking on a panel about trends within the adventure sector at London’s Adventure Travel Conference, he claimed there is currently “an abundance of caution”, while in reality, “travel has never been safer.”
“Here we are obsessing about terrorism, but if you look at the number of Brits killed on holiday every year, it is only around 600 nowadays. We have never ever been safer.”
“The travel industry should be going out with the message that you need to tolerate some flipping risk when you go on holiday, just like you do when you get in your car,” he insisted.
“It’s not a risk-free world, but there are immense rewards out there,” he added.
He also bemoaned consumers that do not book with a reputable travel agent or tour operator.
“Eighty per cent of the readers that get in touch with me [about issues they’ve experienced on holiday] are because they have gone through the cheapest possible deal, with some online travel agent we’ve never heard of. I think, why the heck didn’t you talk to someone we know?” he said.
Calder revealed that he has recently booked Turkey for his own summer holiday this year, saving himself “hundreds of pounds” because consumer caution has created greater availability and lower rates.
