Trump had initially said the executive order would be announced this week, however White House officials have now told reporters that it is being delayed.
The original ban, which prevented refugees and immigrants from seven largely Muslim countries entering the US, sparked outrage and protests around the world. US courts subsequently temporarily blocked the ban.
According to the White House, the rewritten order will address some of the issues which were brought up in the courts.
Homeland security secretary John Kelly said it would be a “tighter, more streamlined version of the first executive order”, the BBC reported.
The initial order, which Trump signed in January, banned anyone from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Libya from entering the US for 90 days.
The measure was blocked by a Seattle court – a decision which was later upheld by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, after it argued that the government had not proved the terror threat justifying the reviving of the ban.
Trump has hit back at the court decision, insisting that “the security of our nation is at stake”.
