Swanson was appointed to the top role at Tui in September following the departure of Andrew Flintham, who has moved on to head up British Airways Holidays.
He started his career at what was to become Tui in 2001, launching the first websites for its Lunn Poly and Thomson brands. He then spent a number of years in various e-commerce and development roles before emerging as chief marketing officer in 2023, at which point he assumed responsibility for Tui’s renewed courtship of third-party agents.
Swanson has, in turn, been succeeded in his role by TTG 30 Under 30 alumnus Bart Quinton Smith, who formally took up his new post as Tui’s UK and Ireland sales and marketing director on 1 January.
Abta’s board comprises individuals elected by fellow board members to represent businesses of different sizes, based on turnover, and others appointed from both inside and outside the travel industry.
"I’m honoured to join the Abta board of directors at this exciting time for the travel industry," said Swanson. "Having been part of Tui’s journey for more than two decades, I’ve witnessed first-hand the evolving landscape of travel and the crucial role Abta plays in supporting and safeguarding our sector.
"I’m looking forward to working collaboratively with the Abta team and fellow board members, as our shared commitment to excellence and customer service mean we can make progress tackling industry challenges, embrace new opportunities, and ensure the UK travel sector continues to thrive.”
Abta chair Alistair Rowland added: "His [Swanson’s] expertise and the in-depth experience he has gained in the travel industry and the wider commercial sector will be invaluable as we continue to look at ways to enhance our services to members and safeguard their interests in our dealings with leading decision makers."
