Police also closed part of a major highway which runs close to the airport, a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said, according to the New York Times.
In a statement the Port Authority said that its preliminary investigation did “not indicate shots were fired” at the airport, but that terminals one and eight were evacuated “to be cautious”.

There was no explanation offered as to what had caused the initial reports. The Port Authority said there were no injuries and at the time “no firearm rounds or shell casings or other evidence of shots fired” had been found.
