The park is set to open in 2031 – subject to planning permission – on a 476-acre site that will include a 500-room hotel, retail and dining area. Around 8,000 people will be employed when the park is fully open.
Plans from Universal Destinations & Experiences, a business unit of Comcast, include a park with several themed lands featuring storytelling, rides and attractions.
Full details are still under wraps, but Universal said: “We recognise the tremendous excitement our developments bring; however, it is still too early in the process to know the possibilities of featured attractions and experiences. Should we secure the necessary planning approvals, we would confirm the exact details at a later stage.”
Mike Cavanagh, Comcast Corporation president, said: “We could not be more excited to take this very important step in our plan to create and deliver an incredible Universal theme park and resort in the heart of the United Kingdom, which complements our growing US-based parks business by expanding our global footprint to Europe.”
Universal said it had chosen the site due to its proximity to rail links from the capital and Luton airport and the availability of flat land needed for construction of a theme park. Work is due to start next year once full planning consent is granted.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: "From Wicked to Minions, Universal is behind some of the biggest blockbusters of recent years.
“This landmark investment is fantastic news for our economy, for UK tourism and for the British public, who will be able to enjoy the biggest and best theme park in Europe on their doorstep.”
