The ceremony took place at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa with Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson arriving in typically flamboyant style in a flying cage to reveal a teaser of the brand’s livery.
The ship, which has yet to be named, will be adults-only and have capacity for 2,700 passengers (who will be known as sailors) when it launches from Miami in 2020.
Branson said: “This is a very big day for Virgin Voyages, as an exciting new holiday option for travellers starts to get ship shape.
“She will be the most recognisable ship sailing the seven seas, delivering an irresistible sailor experience. We’re also committed to making sure our crew are the happiest at sea and will be proud to sail with us.”
Virgin Voyages chief executive Tom McAlpin gave details of what will be available on the first ship through its Adult by Design concept, where all passengers must be at least 18.
“The entire ship will be built with an attention to detail, reflecting the craftsmanship and materiality inspired by super yachts,” said McAplin.
“Designed to feel more intimate and connected to the sea, 86% of all cabins will feature a sea terrace and 93% an ocean view.”
Virgin Voyages intends to launch three ships as part of its new brand, with this first fleet being known as Lady Ships.
The keel-laying event included a party featuring Boy George – who Branson signed to Virgin Records in 1980s.
