More than 10,000 locals have been evacuated from their homes in Knysna - a popular tourist spot on the Garden Route. Authorities have been forced to call on army troop to help battle the blaze on the ground after thick smoke and the poor weather grounded fire service helicopters.
Three people – a farmer, his wife and young son – are believed to have died.
A number of separate fires are burning in the area, famous for its spectacular coast and forests. Knysna’s annual oyster festival, which takes place every July, is a major draw for tourists.
South African Tourism chief executive Sisa Ntshona said additional resources, including 10 fire trucks, have been allocated to help fight the fires.
He added although there has been no mass evacuation of Knysna, certain areas have including Brenton, Belvedere, Welbedacht, Nania, Eastford, Green Pastures and Knysna Heights have been evacutation.
Ntshona said: “Our thoughts are with all the affected people at this time. We advise all travellers, both domestic and international, to please adhere to the warnings issued by emergency services.
“South African Tourism is working very closely with the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA), who have people on the ground in the affected areas who are assisting travellers and residents.”
