Weather warnings stretch from North Carolina to northern Maine, with parts of eastern Canada also affected. Heavy snow and 70mph winds have particularly impacted Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. All non-essential travel has been banned in New York until midday on Monday (23 February).
The US National Weather Service has warned of very heavy snowfall rates upwards of two to three inches per hour and gusty winds of 40-70 mph will continue to batter the northeast of the US in the next few hours.
Flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin have all been impacted by the storm.
Virgin Atlantic has confirmed its flying programme is impacted until 24 February, with 15 flights being cancelled.
The cancelled flights include services to New York from Manchester and Heathrow, as well as a cancelled flight from Heathrow to Boston.
The airline confirmed it was "taking steps" to manage disruption, with affected customers to be rebooked onto alternative travel.
According to BBC News, a number of departures from Heathrow to Philadelphia and Edinburgh to New York have also been cancelled through 23 February.
According to FlightAware, around 5,500 US flights were cancelled on Sunday and hundreds of others were delayed.
