Ahhh, if only we could travel to the US right now, or actually lived in LA…
For those who can take advantage of it, Airbnb is offering up the chance to stay in the famed mansion that Will Smith and co resided at during the hit TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
It’s now been 30 years since Smith rolled up the driveway to the huge white mansion, said to his cabbie “yo homes smell ya later” and knocked on the door of this iconic LA crib for the first time.
Now as a way of reflecting back on the TV programme that give him his major start as an actor, he is working with Airbnb and the house’s owner to rent out “Will’s wing”.
These days, the house is packed with “bold graffiti art, timeless family portraits” and high-end style, and the home rental firm is offering local LA residents the chance to try and grab one of the one-night stays for just $30.
Starting 29 September, groups of up to two Los Angeles County residents will have the chance to book one of five stays in “Will’s wing” of the home on 2, 5, 8, 11 or 14 October, including access to “Will’s posh bedroom and bathroom, a poolside lounge area and an elegant dining room”.
Becoming an Airbnb “host”, Smith lamented that he will not be able to personally meet guests, but promised his friend and long-time collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff would be giving a “virtual greeting”.
On the property listing on the site, Smith said: “I’m Will Smith, actor, producer, rapper, philanthropist, prince... and now Airbnb host [thanks to the mansion’s owners who are allowing me to list it!].
“While I won’t be there during your stay, you’ll be welcomed (virtually) to the mansion by DJ Jazzy Jeff, and my socially distanced mansion concierge will greet you upon arrival and give you the lay of the land. That’s why, when you arrive, we just ask that you wear a mask and keep six feet of social distance. Once you have the keys, the wing is all yours for the evening.”
Other suggested things to do during the stay include “lacing up a fresh pair of Air Jordans before shooting some b-ball in the bedroom, spinning throwback classics all night on turntables just like DJ Jazzy Jeff’s… and donning a fly look from Will’s closet, from argyle prepster to all-star athlete and Bel-Air Athletics gear”.
Smith goes on to add: “Some may say I’ve done it all, but I’ve never opened the doors to a wing of the iconic mansion that helped launch my career. It holds a lot of special memories for me and my friends, and I hope you’ll leave with memories (and a dope handshake!) to last you well beyond your stay.”
DJ Jazzy Jeff is also pairing up with Airbnb to host an Online Experience on 1 October in which he’ll “teach guests how to spin and scratch like a hip-hop legend”; the experience costs $100 and he will greet people virtually from his home studio.
In support of both of these experiences, Airbnb will make a donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, a charity that offers support, development, skill-building programmes, recreational activities and empowerment tools to the city’s young people.
The TV series starred Smith as a fictionalised version of himself, a teenager from West Philadelphia, sent to move in with his wealthy aunty and uncle in Bel Air after getting into a fight in his hometown. The show ran for for a whopping 148 episodes and a reunion special is even said to be in development.
