With consumers wising up to exploitation in the developing world, it’s only a matter of time before responsible, sustainable and ethical travel become more than buzzwords. The ill treatment of animals on factory farms and labourers in the garment industry are issues that have already been put under the microscope; the travel industry could well be the next industry to come under fire according to Khiri Travel’s founder and chief executive, Willem Niemeijer. Since Khiri was established in 1993, Niemeijer says he has already seen a change in customers’ consciousness.
“There’s growing concern from customers about products being sourced ethically and responsibly,” he explains. “We see an increasing number of clients insisting on a fair supply chain. In Europe there’s growing pressure for tour operators operating in Asian countries to be sustainable. In the garment industry now you can’t get away with just going for the cheapest manufacturing company, and the end supplier, such as Nike or Adidas, is responsible.
This parallel will continue in the travel industry.”
