A demonstration on Sunday (26 July) was organised by Menys Turisme, Mes Vida (Less Tourism, More Life) because the Balearic island is said to be "at breaking point", according to the demonstration organisers quoted by the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

This summer Swissport workers at Palma airport will walk out at specific times, after the company and union representatives failed to reach an agreement on Thursday (23 July).

Strike action is planned for 28 July as well as 1, 4, and 8 August. Swissport employees, who are demanding a pay rise adjustment in line with inflation, will go on strike from 7am to midday and from 7pm to 10pm on each of the strike action days.

Majorca has battled to tackle overtourism in recent years, trying several different approaches including raising prices to position the island as a luxury destination.

Last year Majorca invested €1.2 million in technology to manage crowds.

One of the key issues the protest group at the centre of Sunday's demonstration is raising is the redevelopment at Palma airport, which it says is an example of adding to the tourism load, not reducing it.

Work at Spain's third busiest airport began in late 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
