The accident is now being probed by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, which operates under India’s civil aviation authority.
The incident is occurred on Wednesday as the flight, which was scheduled to fly from Mumbai to Hyderabad, was being pushed back for departure.
Reports suggest the pilots had started the engines prematurely after they mistook a signal.
The body of the victim, identified as Ravi Subramanian, is thought to be so badly mutilated that it could not be sent for post mortem examination.
The chairman of Air India Ashwani Lohani told reporters in Mumbai that the incident seemed to have been caused by a "communication gap" but did not elaborate further, the BBC said.
