The cruise peak booking period could be brought forward in future, following a particularly successful wave this year.
That was the suggestion of Carnival UK cruise sales heads, who said that despite geopolitical uncertainty and currency challenges, sales remained strong for 2017 and 2018 bookings.
Speaking ahead of last week’s Carnival UK Cruise Awards, the heads of sales for the six lines – P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Cunard, Seabourn, Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line – attributed a successful 2016 to their agent partners.
Rachel Poultney, director of sales at Princess, said the line had seen “phenomenal growth” in 2016, which had continued into 2017. “The trade managed to deliver on 2017 and 2018. I think there is still scope to bring wave even earlier,” she said.
Carnival UK vice-president of sales Alex White added: “Last year we [P&O Cruises and Cunard] had a record wave and this year is shaping up to be just as strong.”
P&O Cruises launched its 2018 brochure in September – five months early, bringing it forward from April. “[The move] has been hugely successful,” he said. “And it’s created a halo effect for 2017 bookings – demand is very strong.”
He added: “April this year will still have a launch, but it will be for winter 2019. It shows the confidence that we have in people booking early.”
Wendy Lahmich, director of sales for Holland America Line and Seabourn, said both lines had launched their wave periods in December for the past two years, which she said had proved significantly positive.
Meanwhile, Luke Smith, who was recently appointed head of sales at Carnival Cruise Line, said he believed this year would see a “much more consistent booking period year-round”.
