In a statement on the FCO’s website it said it was advising against travel to:
- Madrid and La Rioja
- The municipalities of La Bastida and Vitoria (both in the Basque Country)
- And Miranda de Ebro (in Castilla y Leon).
The FCO said the Spanish Ministry of Health “had designated these as areas of community transmission of coronavirus”.
It was the most popular destination for British holidaymakers in 2018 according to a report by Finder, which analysed the latest statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Authorities in the most affected regions are also putting extraordinary measures in place to curb the spread of coronavirus, such as closing schools, public sports centres, theatres and elderly day care centres, and prohibiting gatherings attracting more than 1,000 attendees.
There are now more than 3,800 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Spain.
