Working with owner and developer, KKH Property Investors, Marriott International will manage the hotel under a long-term agreement.
The project just about escaped the recent moratorium on new tourist accommodation in the popular city, as KHH had already received the green light for its project before the one-year ban on new licenses was introduced by incoming mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, last July.
The 100-room Edition will have three restaurant concepts, a rooftop bar and nightclub and is being created in the Ciutat Vella district of the city, close to Santa Caterina Market.
It will be the third Edition in Europe, and is a transformation of an existing office building by Office of Architecture in Barcelona – OAB (Carlos Ferrater Studio), Ian Schrager and Spanish designer, Lazaro Rosa-Violan.
“We couldn’t be more excited about the potential for the brand throughout Europe,” said Dan Flannery, global managing director of the brand, while Schrager added that Barcelona represents “a great, cultural epicentre of Europe”.
A report in 2014 by consulting firm Aguirre Newman put the total amount of five-star and luxury accommodation in Barcelona at 9,150 beds out of a total of 70,000, a higher proportion than either London or Paris.
The one-year ban was to do something to regulate the influx of visitors to the city, but it was said to have affected eight of 11 planned new luxury projects in Barcelona.
Soho House also already had its green light in place for a 100-room project on Placa Duc de Medinaceli, which will open later this year.
Future Edition hotels are planned for Sanya (2016), Bangkok (2017), Abu Dhabi (2017), Shanghai (2017), Times Square (2018), West Hollywood (2018), Reykjavik (2018), Bali (2018) and Dubai (2019).
