The building became notorious in the 1970s as the scene of a burglary that ultimately led to the resignation of US President Richard Nixon, whose administration had authorised the covert operation.
The Watergate Hotel has now reopened in the building after a nine-year $125 million renovation carried out by Euro Capital Properties and a design project headed by Ron Arad.
The property has 336 rooms and suites including two appropriately named Presidential Suites. Around half of the rooms feature balconies and all of them include floor-to-ceiling marble Zebrano bathrooms.
Rakel Cohen, senior vice president of design and development for Euro Capital Properties, said: “The Watergate is undoubtedly one of the most glamorous and illustrious hotels in the world.
“We paid meticulous attention to every detail in its renovation and we’re excited to bring our vision to life. Its intrigue is driven by evocative design, from the deep-rooted retro feel to the mystique that lies behind every curve of the hotel’s architecture.”
Other hotel facilities include the Kingbird restaurant and bar, Top of the Gate rooftop lounge and a whisky bar.
The Argenta Spa features eight treatment suites, steam room, nail salon, sauna and relaxation areas. There is also an indoor saltwater pool plus aerobic space and gym.
