International consultants Mercer carry out the quality of life survey across 230 cities around the world every year, looking at a range of factors including the political, social and economic climate, medical services, education and infrastructure such as public transportation.
Leisure facilities such as restaurants, theatres, cinemas, sports facilities and environmental factors including green space and air quality are also taken into consideration.
Vienna is the only major world capital with an extensive wine growing industry operation within its city limits and boasts 850 parks.
Mercer said Vienna scored particularly highly in a number of categories – “providing a safe and stable environment to live in, a high level of public utilities and transport facilities, and good recreational facilities”.
Among newcomers on the city’s luxury hotel scene is the Grand Ferdinand. Set on the Ringstrasse boulevard, the hotel is a renovated 1950s office building now home to 188 rooms, three restaurants and a rooftop pool.
Scottish visitors now have easier access to the city with the arrival of the first Scotland to Vienna route, launched by easyJet from Edinburgh this month (February).
