The new three-times weekly service, which launches on Tuesday (April 2), is Heathrow’s 12th direct connection to China, more than double the number it offered at the start of 2018.
Air China will operate the route on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays using Airbus A330 aircraft.
Chengdu is home to China’s Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, and the country’s famous Sichuan cuisine.
The Air China route to London had previously flown into Gatwick. However, the airline announced in November last year it would switch arrivals to Heathrow.
Ross Baker, Heathrow’s chief commercial officer, said the route – which will have capacity for 80,000 passengers annually – would also serve an important export purpose.
