Angel Vazquez said after a "trying half-year" for tourism owing to Covid-19, the impacts of the pandemic – including the absence of British tourists – was still being felt across Spain.
"British tourists are of huge importance to the island, and are always welcome on our shores," said Vazquez, Lanzarote’s minister of tourism promotion.
"The change in the UK government’s travel advice has meant that this period of hardship will be extended into the near future, however, this gives us all an opportunity to plan accordingly for the approaching winter sun season."
In a message to the British travel trade, Vazquez said the island was a safe destination with various Covid protocols designed to detect cases at its airport or during a visitor’s stay. "UK visitors and operators can have complete confidence we are offering a rapid and rigorous health response," he said.
"Our focus now is to be in a position to offer British travellers a quality winter sun option for those still seeking a belated summer holiday."
Lanzarote has partnered with AXA Insurance to create dedicated Covid cover, extending to costs incurred by any visitors who contract coronavirus during their stay.
These include medical expenses, repatriation and an extended stay of up to 15 days in the same resort, hotel or accommodation.
The policy covers all tourists, as well as their travel – regardless of their Covid test results. It will be effective for the next 12 months.
Prior to the UK government revoking Spain’s quarantine-free travel corridor, around 50% of the island’s hotels had reopened, with this number expected to increase during the winter.
"We are confident the combination of operators offering services from the UK and the excellent tourism infrastructure on the island will mean Lanzarote offers the most competitive winter sun offering for your clients," Vazquez added.
