Spain has now backtracked on its stance on Sunday when it stopped short of a ban on UK arrivals.
In a tweet, Spain’s ministry of foreign affairs said on Monday afternoon that it would suspend “from tomorrow” entry into Spanish territory of UK citizens, “except nationals or residents in our country”.

The Spanish government said border controls at Gibraltar would also be “strengthened”.
The country joins more than 40 others in closing its doors to the UK during the Christmas break.
