Almost half (43%) of respondents planning a getaway in 2022 said a beach holiday would be their top choice.
The second most popular choice was a city break, chosen by just under a third (31%) of respondents, while other popular options were adventure holidays (16%), cruises (15%), wellness breaks (8%) and ski trips (7%).
The WTM Industry Report quizzed 1,000 consumers about their travel plans, with 648 respondents saying they wanted an overseas holiday next summer.
Perhaps reflecting a desire to travel closer to the UK amid travel restrictions throughout 2021, only a quarter (23%) of survey respondents said they wanted their holiday to be to a long-haul destination.
The most popular method of booking also seems to reflect issues over refunds and trip cancellations during the early months of the pandemic.
Almost a third (31%) of those surveyed said they would book a package with a tour operator, while just 8% would opt to book directly with accommodation providers in the sharing economy, such as Airbnb, and a further 8% said they would be happy with a "DIY holiday".
